Type 2 diabetes can be beaten. It is a war with no quarter given but it can be won. Beating type 2 diabetes comes as we use the weapons we have to fight it.
First let me say, I feel like I have a right to speak to this issue seeing as how I am a practicing diabetic.
Usually diabetes causes kidney problems. My diabetes came as the indirect result of a kidney problem. In 1991 I was diagnosed with PKD or Polycystic kidney disease. In 1992 I had to have a kidney transplant (my sweet wife loaned me one of hers!). Anyway…the effects of the anti-rejection medicine I take closed my cell receptors up tight and I became a really sweet dude. It has been a war ever since.
In every war there are certain things that are common. Wars usually come about because enemies square off. In this case the combatants are me and diabetes. In every war there are prizes to be won or lost, be it a kingdom or just a section of ground. In my case it is my very life. In wars there are weapons to be employed. In this war diabetes fights from the secure fortress of my own body. It is a fifth column, if you will. It over works my pancreas. It closes up my cell receptors so that energy (sugar) can’t get to my cells to strengthen me. It works on my mind with a propaganda machine that constantly bombards me with false information. “You are so tired,” it says (which is true many times). “You just need to sit back and rest a while,” it whispers to my mind (which is hardly ever true). “You can never win,” it hisses in my ear.
But I must remember. These are lies.
I must confess, I have not won the war…but I have won a battle or two. I have weapons too! In my struggles I have decided that there are at least six arrows in my arsenal that can help me win, at least to the extent that my life is enjoyable and profitable. These are things every diabetic can do to win the glucose war. Here they are.
1. You can admit that you are in a war. Diabetes is a serious and vicious enemy that will gouge out your eyes (diabetes is a leading cause of blindness). It will dismember you (many have lost limbs to the scourge of diabetes). It will destroy you inner organs (diabetes is a major cause of kidney failure). I do not say these things to terrify you…but to warn you. You must understand and admit that you are in a war with a vicious and merciless enemy.
2. You can stay in close consultation with your top advisor in this war. That is your health care provider. He or she will give you the advise of an expert in fighting this enemy.
3. You can monitor your sugar. Knowledge is power someone has said. This is never more true than in the war against diabetes. If you do not know what your sugar range is supposed to be (between 75 and 125) you don’t have a goal to shoot for. If you know what your sugar usually runs when you are not “working on it” you can know how far you have to go. If you monitor often you can know when your sugar tends to get high, what activities you engage in that causes it to peak (cookies and milk before bed), and what steps you need to take to bring your sugar into range (can the cookies!!!) Which brings me to the next weapon.
5. You can control your eating. You “can” control your eating, even though your belly screams, your mouth waters and you think “I just have to have a piece of that strudel.” This is the kicking and screaming of a spoiled child. Take your appetite in hand and bend it to your will!
6. The final weapon I would mention is exercise. I am not talking about heavy metal here. This is not body building. This is moderate, sustained, aerobic exercise that is practiced every day for at least twenty minutes.
