A good diet is the key to good health. While in some cases diabetes is caused due to genetic factors or other triggers, more often than not it is diets rich in sugar that lead to blood sugar problems later in life. Every diet has the scope to be tweaked a little bit so that you can ward off the danger of diabetes. If you are overweight, have high blood pressure, low HDL, and eat a lot of processed foods, you fall in the high-risk category.

Natural Cure for Diabetes

Everyone ought to slowly wean themselves off highly processed junk food and shift to leaner, more natural alternatives. You can also use the three natural cures for diabetes tips which are listed below:

In order to cure diabetes naturally, one has to also know what the symptoms and causes are. Diabetes is usually caused by overeating, obesity, and from stress as well. Emotions such as worry, depression, and anxiety also contribute to diabetes, which could lead to people feeling easily tired mentally and physically, hungry and thirsty often, and would develop health problems like anemia and palpitations. Some of the cures may involve activities that tackle these problems, so be ready for some changes in your diet and everyday activities.

Water is also extremely important. Both drinking water and using hydrotherapy is just as critical. You should be drinking at least 16 ounces of water for every 2 hours you are awake to flush your body and maintain blood sugar levels. You should also learn more about hot tub treatments and how it can benefit you in numerous ways.

Finding the right minerals is also very important to diabetics. For instance, most diabetics are deficient in potassium. You should immediately supplement potassium rich foods (like bananas) as well as a potassium supplement.

Paleolithic Diet

Eating what Paleolithic people ate is becoming more popular as a result of the diabetes epidemic in the United States. Paleolithic people typically ate lean meats from wild game, as well as fish, birds, nuts, vegetables, and most fruits when they could find them. More than 100,000 generations of people depended on this kind of diet. Diabetes care was virtually nonexistent during that time because processed foods did not exist. Only the last two generations of people have been introduced to highly processed food.

Taking part in regular exercise can also really help to reduce the effects of diabetes. It is a well known fact that being overweight is a big contributor to Diabetes Type 2.So by losing weight and staying healthy you will be successfully helping the body to deal with conditions such as Diabetes a lot better.

One natural treatment you might not have considered but which can be very effective is bitter melon. Bitter melon is great for treating diabetes because it contains a compound which is extremely like insulin. It will help to control the levels of sugar in the blood too which is obviously extremely beneficial.

Other Natural Cures

Another natural cure for diabetes is exercise. It is important that you control your weight, in order to also control your diabetes. Anytime you exercise, you are improving your body’s ability to respond to insulin. Before you begin any type of exercise routine, you will want to be sure to consult with your doctor. Exercise such as walking, swimming and a light game are all excellent forms of exercising. Yoga is also very beneficial for anyone with diabetes as it helps to lower stress levels tremendously.

Although the increase in obesity, due to a poor diet and lack of exercise, in children is beginning to increase the incidence of these overweight children developing type 2 diabetes, it is usually type 1 diabetes that develops in juveniles. As with many of the common diseases of the endocrine system, an auto-immune problem is the root cause of type 1 diabetes, the body’s natural defences begin to attack the bodies tissues rather than the invaders they are designed to destroy, as they were designed to. In the case of type 1 diabetes, the immune system destroys the valuable beta cells within the pancreas that are responsible for the production and release of insulin.

The main culprit of this problem is all the refined sugar that is in our food. It’s almost impossible to find something without it. A lot of people like to blame genetics on this problem and genetics probably does, but if people weren’t eating the amount of refined sugar to begin with, there wouldn’t be a problem. What happens with this sugar is that it causes the insulin in the body to spike and than crash. Normally it can handle that, but when it is done over and over again for a while it starts to become unresponsive.

One of the main concerns with type 2 juvenile diabetes is the affects it can have later on in a child’s life. Children with type 2 diabetes have been found to have more life threatening complications than type 1 diabetics. Some of the major problems juveniles with this type of diabetes face include heart disease, damage to the nervous system, renal failure, blindness, and limb amputations, particularly of the feet and lower legs.

The reality is that diabetes is a serious disease because it affects the organs of the body. This means that if it develops unchecked it can have devastating consequences that are not reversible. Saving the eyesight of one or more of your eyes is much more achievable than returning it. Diabetes is a degenerative disease but its progress can be slowed if not halted. This means that the quality of life can be preserved for longer than if no treatment were received.

Treatment for juvenile type diabetes patients involves different areas of concern. Aside from properly monitoring insulin level of the patient, managing his or her diet is also very important, the spacing of meals and the content and sugar composition of his or her food should also be properly checked.

An improper diet can worsen the condition of the patient. Some results may include sudden rise in blood sugar levels, hypoglycemia or too low blood sugar level, or development of diabetes related complications such as blurred vision, heart and kidney failure, seizures, nerve damage, among others. A good exercise regimen is also recommended by health experts for juvenile type diabetes patients alongside carefully controlled diets and medications.

What may sound simple could actually be hard for those directly involved in administering care for juvenile type diabetes patients. The mental, physical, and emotional effect of it on the patient and on those caring for the patient like family members and friends can be daunting. The key to proper care and patient management is accepting the condition and doing what is necessary to keep that condition at safest level possible. Care and more care is what the juvenile patient needs. When the disease strikes, love should strike back. Consequently, the disease will be dealt with in the best way possible.

As of now, diabetes affects a lot of people between the ages of 40- 60 years old. It is a chronic disease because it has no cure; this means that once you have been diagnosed with having diabetes mellitus it will stay with you for the rest of your life. There is no cause for alarm since the treatment of diabetes mellitus starts with a fair amount of lifestyle changes; this means that you could still live life to its fullest.

The treatment of diabetes mellitus is largely affected by the nature of the disease and to treat diabetes mellitus it is necessary for one to learn about the disease. There are two forms of diabetes namely DM type I and DM type II. The only main difference between the two is that in DM type I your pancreas is incapable of producing your insulin, the hormone that lowers your blood glucose. In DM type II your pancreas is able to produce some insulin but your body may poorly utilize the insulin.

Diabetes mellitus is known in Ayurveda as “Madhumeha”. Ayurveda describes the pathology of this disease as resulting from a disturbed “Meda, Kleda and Kapha”. It is believed that all the body tissues lose their vitality because of this condition.

Type 1 diabetic patients who are dependent on insulin injections should monitor their blood sugar and continue the injections regularly. Type 2 diabetic patients may be able to control their blood sugar with Ayurvedic medicines and other measures like diet restrictions and weight control.

Diabetes Mellitus treatment can be achieved by using Parslane. The seeds of parslane have shown to be useful in diabetes treatment. Take a teaspoon of the seeds every day with a cup of water for three to four months. This will help to increase the body’s own capacity to make insulin.

Diabetes Mellitus treatment can be achieved by using Bitter Gourd. This home remedy has shown to be the most important in controlling diabetes. The reason why is bitter gourd has shown to contain a hypoglycaemic or insulin-like principle, which has been found to be very beneficial in lower blood and urine sugar levels.

Insulin, a hormone released from the pancreas, controls the amount of sugar in the blood. When a person eats or drinks, food is broken down into materials, including sugar that the body needs to function. Sugar is absorbed into the bloodstream and stimulates the pancreas to produce insulin allows sugar to move from the blood into the cells. Once inside the cells, sugar is converted to energy, which is either used immediately or stored until it is needed.

If the body does not produce enough insulin to move the sugar into the cells, the resulting high levels of sugar in the blood and the inadequate amount of sugar in the cells together produce the symptoms and complications of diabetes.

Diabetes mellitus is known in Ayurveda as “Madhumeha”. Ayurveda describes the pathology of this disease as resulting from a disturbed “Meda, Kleda and Kapha”. It is believed that all the body tissues lose their vitality because of this condition.

Hands on therapy or massage can improve the well being and health of a person. Soft tissues and muscles are manipulated in this process which affects the circulatory, muscular and nervous systems of the body. Massage had since been used to treat diabetes and other diseases.

ype 2 diabetes, formerly called adult-onset or noninsulin-dependent diabetes, is the most common form of diabetes. People can develop type 2 diabetes at any age, even during childhood. This form of diabetes usually begins with insulin resistance, a condition in which fat, muscle, and liver cells do not use insulin properly. At first, the pancreas keeps up with the added demand by producing more insulin. In time, however, it loses the ability to secrete enough insulin in response to meals. People who are overweight and inactive are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes. Treatment includes taking diabetes medicines, making wise food choices, exercising regularly, controlling blood pressure and cholesterol, and taking aspirin daily—for some.

Individuals with Adult-Onset, Type 2, Diabetes represent 90 to 95 percent of all diabetics. An estimated 15.7 million Americans have diabetes, of which almost one-third are unaware that they have the disorder.

Both conditions are epidemic with 1 in 13 Americans and 1 in 3 of those over age 60 developing ‘adult’ diabetes. Most will develop heart, kidney, nerve and blood vessel diseases for an amazing 1/4th of total health care costs! Other countries have similar increasing rates. Later-in-life diabetes (during pregnancy being a warning) is an eventual one-way track to heart disease.

Type 2 diabetes leaves a person at danger of having elevated levels of sugar (glucose) in their blood. This high sugar content then causes damage to blood vessels, which in turn harms many organs including the eyes, nerves, kidneys and heart.

“A positive parental history of diabetes was also strongly associated with overweight status in both childhood and adulthood,” Morrison said.

Diagnosis

Diabetes is diagnosed by testing the blood for sugar levels. Blood is taken in the morning after you have fasted overnight. Typically, the body keeps blood sugar levels between 70 and 100 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL), even after fasting. If a blood sugar level after fasting is greater than 125 mg/dL, diabetes is diagnosed.

Treatment and management

Diabetes mellitus is currently a chronic disease, without a cure, and medical emphasis must necessarily be on managing/avoiding possible short-term as well as long-term diabetes-related problems. There is an exceptionally important role for patient education, dietetic support, sensible exercise, self glucose monitoring, with the goal of keeping both short-term blood glucose levels, and long term levels as well, within acceptable bounds.

There are many different aspects of your health that affect whether or not you develop diabetes. Some of these factors are outside of your control including:

Age - If you’re over 45, you’re at a heightened risk. And up to 20 percent of Americans over age 65 have diabetes.

Heredity - If a parent had diabetes, you’re likelier to also develop the disease.

While ignoring your diabetes can seriously harm your health and increase your risk of complications, it is understandable that a person with diabetes would experience these feelings. Fortunately, there are strategies for alleviating the stress of managing your diabetes, and avoiding diabetes burnout.

Type I diabetes is a very serious and non-preventable condition where the patient needs a daily dose of insulin since the pancreas does not produce it at all or in enough quantities.

“The kind of cravings and patterns tell us natural medicine professionals a lot about the missing minerals and other triggers. By correcting them, cravings usually stop within as little as a couple of weeks. Avoiding diabetes is fairly easy early on. When an individual is already deep into it, improved control (and sometimes reversal) may still be possible but needs to be done under the supervision of a knowledgeable professional.”

Diabetes tablets

Metformin has been shown to reduce risk of diabetes, but this may mainly be because it is treating diabetes rather than avoiding it. Other diabetes tablets have not been studied adequately. Drugs to reduce weight would have a role.

Basically, the antibodies that may arise when whole cow’s milk proteins are absorbed in the infant’s gut can sometimes lead to the destruction of the cells in the pancreas that make insulin. It has been suggested, as a potential mechanism, that some protein on the surface of the cells ‘looks’ like a cow’s milk protein, as far as the antibodies are concerned.

Of the millions of Americans with diabetes, it is amazing that the preventable form of Type II makes up an overwhelming majority of the cases. This is extremely serious, since diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S.A totaling over 70,000 people every year and costing over $132 billion annually in direct and indirect costs.

One of the most prominent features of diabetes is its uniqueness. No two diabetics respond in exactly the same way to their food, insulin, or exercise, and no two individuals, even if they show the same glucose test results, will experience precisely the same complications. The disease is, by definition, unpredictable. Still, making allowance for surprises, we know the effects of more insulin, less insulin, more exercise, less exercise, more food, etc.

Conditions Related to Brittle Diabetes

Brittle diabetes can be caused by gastrointestinal absorption problems, including delayed stomach emptying (gastroperesis), drug interactions, problems with insulin absorption, or hormonal malfunction.People who have severely low blood sugar levels may also have problems with their thyroid (hypothyroidism) and adrenal glands (adrenal insufficiency).

It is true that some people do have an unusual or exaggerated response to food, medication, or stress, and despite their trying to be consistent with their diabetes regimen, their control is erratic. However, diabetes specialists now know that there are far fewer “true brittle” people with diabetes, because generally the swings of blood glucose have a preventable or treatable cause.

Causes of Brittle Diabetes

Some of the causes of Brittle Diabetes are included in the list below:

Haemochromatosis

Polyendochrine syndromes - some rare syndromes cause multiple autoimmune diseases in various body glands

Symptoms of Brittle Diabetes

Palpitations

Weight Gain (especially around your waist and abdomen)

Skin Changes (dryness, thinning look)

Treatment of Brittle Diabetes

The approach to management will obviously vary depending on the specific cause in each case. In evaluating a patient with brittle diabetes (who may have mountainous medical records!), it may be beneficial to start fresh with a new physician and diabetes care team. A fresh look is helpful in remaining objective, decreasing the ability of the patient to manipulate the care team and possibly spot a metabolic cause which may have been missed.

The new study, published in this month’s issue of Diabetes Care, looked at the effect of the cactus pear, known locally as nopales, on blood sugar levels when eaten with regular Mexican fodder like burritos and quesadillas.

The prickly pear cactus—a plant that has the distinction of being a vegetable, fruit, and flower all in one—is destined to be the next big herbal superstar, following in the footsteps of St. John’s wort and Echinacea, according to author Ran Knishinsky. One of the driving forces behind its popularity is that each part of this plant functions as both food and medicine. It has been a staple in the diets of the people of the southwestern portion of the United States, the Middle East, parts of Europe and Africa, and Central and South America for hundreds of years.

Nopalitos - Cactus, or Nopal, is a typical sight in the Mexican landscape. It is not strange that it should find its way into the local cuisine. The use of Nopalitos has its origins in the Roman Catholic observance of serving meatless dishes during Lent; now they are a part of everyday cooking.

The paddle, or tender pads, of the plant (called prickly pear in the U.S.) are eaten as a green vegetable in Mexico. The best young shoots are packed fresh, pickled or preserved.

Many Uses

Prickly pear cactus belongs to the genus Opuntia, a large group of cacti that contains over 300 varieties–some with spines, some without. A common type of prickly pear cactus, also known as Indian fig (Opuntia ficus-indica), grows in large thickets. Originally native to Mexico, it’s now cultivated in Mediterranean regions of Europe, the western United States, and throughout Latin America.

A systematic search of the international medical literature will be conducted to identify all published and unpublished medical studies examining the relationship between prickly pear cactus and metabolic control among persons with diabetes; many if not most of these reports can only be identified by contacting known investigators in Mexico and other Latin American countries and/or by searching MEDLINE and other international electronic databases.

If you haven’t looked intently at the Mexican flag, a prickly pear cactus with its red-orange grandiose blossoms is where the eagle at the center is proudly perched on. For centuries, indigenous groups of South America and the southern part of the United Stat depended on this plant for nourishment. Also called nopal, nopalitos, and nopales, this cactus, of genus Opuntia, is consumed by the Aztec tribe and other locals in various forms to control or even potentially cure Type 2 Diabetes as long ago as the 15th and 16th centuries.

There is no such thing as borderline diabetes! The method used to diagnose diabetes is absolute, with well-defined criteria on blood testing. By definition, an individual either has diabetes or does not. Most people who have been told they have “borderline” diabetes actually have diabetes. Their doctor may have wanted to avoid scaring or worrying them by actually coming out and saying that diabetes was present.

The pancreas usually secretes the hormone insulin to keep glucose (basically sugar) at a safe level in your bloodstream. People with diabetes have a pancreas that doesn’t recognize glucose or doesn’t make insulin to keep glucose at bay. Thus, people with diabetes have high glucose levels, 126 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) or more after an overnight fast. People with Type 1 diabetes make no insulin at all. Those with Type 2 diabetes do make insulin, but it’s either not enough or the body doesn’t recognize it. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of the two.

For those in whom lifestyle changes are not enough to normalize blood glucose, at least two medications have been shown to be effective in preventing progression to type 2 diabetes in people with IGT or prediabetes. These are metformin, proven effective in the DPP trial, which also studied lifestyle intervention, and acarbose, shown effective in another trial, the STOP-NIDDM study.

Who’s at risk for Pre-Diabetes?

The risk factors for Pre-Diabetes and type 2 diabetes are the same. People should be screened if they are overweight and age 45 or older. They should be screened regularly if they are under age 45 and have one additional risk factor; are Hispanic, African American, American Indian, or Pacific Islander; have a family history of diabetes; have central (waistline) obesity; have a sedentary lifestyle; have had gestational (pregnancy-related) diabetes; have high blood pressure; have blood fat problems (such as high triglycerides, high LDL, or low HDL).

Can Medication Help?

New research shows that medications may aid in diabetes prevention and not just control of the disease once you have it. There are several different studies that show drugs along with a healthy lifestyle, can reduce the risk of developing diabetes in a high risk person.

Biotin, also known as vitamin H or B7 and C10H16N2O3S (Biotin; Coenzyme R, Biopeiderm), is a water-soluble B-complex vitamin which is composed of an ureido ring fused with a tetrahydrothiophene ring. A valeric acid substituent is attached to one of the carbon atoms of the tetrahydrothiophene ring. Biotin is important in the catalysis of essential metabolic reactions to synthesize fatty acids, in gluconeogenesis, and to metabolize leucine.

Diabetes is a disorder of metabolism–the way our bodies use digested food for growth and energy. Most of the food we eat is broken down into glucose, the form of sugar in the blood. Glucose is the main source of fuel for the body. After digestion, glucose passes into the bloodstream, where it is used by cells for growth and energy. For glucose to get into cells, insulin must be present. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas, a large gland behind the stomach.

People with Type II (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes may prove to be a different story. When Japanese researchers studied the biotin and blood sugar levels of people with diabetes, they found that the higher someone’s blood sugar, the lower his level of biotin. They also noted that people with diabetes have significantly lower biotin levels than people who don’t have the disease.

In several studies, biotin supplementation has been shown to enhance the performance of insulin, the hormone that plays a critical role in helping your body incorporate blood sugar. The supplements can also increase the activity of an enzyme, glucokinase, which the liver uses early in the process of utilizing blood sugar, says Michael Murray, N.D., a naturopathic doctor and co-author of The Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine.

Supplementation with large quantities of biotin may significantly enhance glucokinase activity, thereby improving glucose metabolism in diabetics. When people with Type 1 diabetes (IDDM) were given 16 mg of biotin per day for just one week, their fasting glucose levels dropped by 50%. Similar results have been reported using 9 mg per day for two months in people with Type 2 diabetes (NIDDM). Biotin may also reduce pain from diabetic nerve damage.

This study involved 34 people with type 2 diabetes. For 12 weeks, all got two daily servings of a nutritional shake with “moderate amounts of carbohydrates,” similar to drinks marketed to diabetics, he says. During the study, participants were randomly assigned to receive either a shake containing the chromium picolinate-biotin mix or a plain shake used for comparison. Participants did not know which type of shake they were receiving.
